Short Days + Cold Nights

.

This past week my daughter and I went to the first Kids Who Bird meeting (Audubon Society).
.

Last week my friend Web gave me a detailed tutorial on Danish Oil and how to apply it to my Danish chair, which I have been putting off..scared I may botch it and ruin the whole thing. So, I feel a bit more confident and motivated to continue with the furniture and painting in the Living Room. Web also mentioned braces for the couch, which I have tried to repair a couple times (its wobbly). So, unfortunately it's been sitting untouched against the wall, restricted from use.

So, this weekend I cleaned everything out of the living room that was littering the walls, corners of the floors, so I can paint finally in the next week or two. There is still pottery and glass and unframed prints spilling off the mantel because I am unsure of a safe place to house it all while painting and until I get the shelves done. Gray managed somehow to jump up there, as jam packed as it is, into a tiny open space and almost knocked 90% of it down.

hanging pottery still on the walls...

Days have been so much shorter and it gets dark and cold so so so early...
There are barely any more flowers in the back yard these days.

I get your blog updates and when I was reading your latest I saw two of my favorite things. One I got from my Grandma Jane. She lived in Shreveport Louisiana. It is the small Green and Yellow vase. The other is a bird vase I bought in Fernandina Florida. The one that you have with yellow turq and light blue. So cool to see them on your blog.

You must tell us what you learned about the Danish Oil. I to have had a can sitting and waiting in the basement for months. I'm afraid to begin, but my table is in desperate help.

CRANKY GRANDMA-
Oh, I will (I want to take pictures while I am allpying it and post it with the steps I took)...but basically he told me to first clean the wood first with mineral spirits and 000 steel wool (verty gently) to remove old finishes and dirt. Then wipe clean with a soft cloth (like a t-shirt). Then apply the danish oil, which is a blend of varnish and oil, with a rag, wipe it off, let it sit 30 minutes..then you can do another application. It won't seal like a poly or shellac would, so if you put it on a table, you may just want to put a final poly etc on top of that. But, for chairs etc that won't have things like cups that could leave rings etc resting on them you can leave just the danish oil and reapply it whenver you think it needs more, be it 2 months from the first application or 2 years. :)

MOLLY-

I love Adrian Tomine. That was actually one of the most thoughtful gifts I have ever received from a boyfriend (it's a first printing and is signed by Tomine). :)
