Custom Silhouettes

.

I have been trying to come up with some ideas for a little Bailey memorial. Sifting through old black and white negatives wasn't what I had in mind..but rather something a bit more special.

I like the idea of silhouettes, b/c they are simple and classic and something that I can hand down to my daughter.

So, then there is question of digital art or classic paper cut art.

I have this recent profile that I took just for the purpose:

The first option is All Pop Art, which is computer generated. I could get a 16 x 20 stretched canvas piece for about $120 with a off white/black color scheme:

examples:

.

The second option would be Cut Arts, which is fantastic. I could get an 11 x 14 for $75.00, unframed.

The site states, "Each Silhouette is cut out entirely freehand. Karl simply looks at the subject's profile (whether in person or from a photograph) and starts cutting their exact likeness out of black paper. Each Silhouette is an original, one of a kind work of art, signed by the artist."

examples:

I really like the idea that these are hand cut and signed by the artist.
.

Anyway, I think both places are really neat and though I would pass along the info!

Reese's Pieces and Cute with Chris

.

The past week has been a tough one, obviously.
We miss Bailey immensely...and right now it doesn't feel like the missing and the sadness will ever lessen, but we know it will eventually. :)

Today I am getting back to work and I just want to thank you all for your patience and understanding..kind emails and comments. I appreciate it so much.

Some orders were pushed back by 2 days, but everything will be back on schedule on Monday of this week. And please email me if you need to know the status of your order! I apologize for the delays.
.

Without the unhealthy doses of Reese's Pieces and Cute With Chris episodes I think this past week would have been a lot harder for me.

So, thank you...Reese's Pieces and Chris Leavins for making me feel a whole lot better over the past few days:

.

I came across this first Cute With Chris video while mindlessly searching for Japanese Androids and Robots on YouTube.com Wednesday. The second is a favorite:

Estate Sale Finds..again!

I have a hectic weekend, or what is rest of it, ahead of me. But my sister, my daughter and I decided we would take off this morning at 6:30 a.m. and hit some Estate Sales/Yard Sales in search of furniture and housewares.

My sister is moving into a new house soon and needs some things...and I have been without night stands, end tables, book storage, a couch etc for a few months now...so, I am always on the lookout.

So, today I found:

This end table and night stand (with a drawer!) for $12.00 each:

.

This mosaic top for $5.00, which I will attach to some tapered legs I found a couple months ago:

It has really nice detail on the wood...and gold accents on the square tile:

.

Another magazine rack, which I always need, for $1.00:

.

And this is so dusty, it's scary---but my daughter loved it, it was only $5.00, and I do have some similar birds to attach to it once we clean it up.
The piece of drift wood itself is really really nice too:

.

Hopefully next weekend it will be my lucky one..and I'll find the bookcase and the couch...

Cameras

I am saving up for a new work camera for day-lab.

I don't want an SLR, but something a bit better than a cheaper point and shoot. I do want more consistency with color/image quality and good depth of field capabilities (something I miss from my analog cameras, that I can't seem to get with my cheap little digital).

What kind of camera do you use? pros and cons of that camera?

I have been looking at these 2, and leaning towards the Canon G7. Do you have or know this camera? If so, I would love to hear about your experiences with either:

Nikon Coolpix P5000
.

Canon PowerShot G7
.

I would love to hear any recommendations anyone might have too. :)
Thanks!

Finished Chairs

Over the weekend I worked on getting all 4 or so layers of paint off of the first of the four chairs...worked till it was too dark to work anymore:

.

The next morning I sanded and cleaned it..painted and re-upholstered the seat. I finished up yesterday:

I really like how it turned out. I wasn't sure about the upholstery, but after looking at a million florals and stripes etc...I decided neutral and solid would be best. I didn't want it competing with any other fabrics/designs in any of the other rooms.
.

so, there are 3 left. One is obviously in better shape than the others:

.

I also picked up some square foot tile pieces on sale, to make end tables with. I just couldn't find any tables that I liked enough, or that were affordable and of good quality:

..

back to work...hope you all had a nice weekend..father's day..etc..

P.S. I should have a pretty large jewelry updates thursday or Friday at www.day-lab.com so be sure to check back!

Recent Favorite Furniture Finds

I have to admit I am getting pretty tired already of seeing all the 'mid century' furniture floating around (even UO has their mass produced version of it right now..). It has become kind of boring to me lately.

But there will always be certain designs/designers that I can't get sick of, no matter how often I see it/their pieces. This is a short refreshing picture list of some of my favorites I found in my furniture bookmarks folder over the weekend:

Unexpected Estate Sale Finds

.

So, this morning I left at 7:30 a.m. to get some coffee and half asleep at a red light I turn to my left and this huge old Tudor style house that is completely surrounded by a retaining wall (I have never seen the gates open) was having a yard sale..inside the walls, on the grounds.

Well, I had to go, regardless of the fact that I was in my pajamas. I am too curious about this house, but also because I need furniture in a really bad way. We have 4 chairs in my house and that's it as far as seating goes.

I was in and out of the garage sale in 5 minutes flat. Used soft eyes to quickly scan the inventory and walked out with 3 pieces of furniture, for a total of $17.50.

These two chairs..heavy as hell and built super well were $5.00 each.
The first is a solid Captain's Chair and the second appears to be a 1950s Eero Saarinen for Knoll knock off?..It has a metal tag, circular with a 24 stamped into it:

.

And this fantastic tapered leg mid century (huge 20" high, 28" long) coffee or end table..has planked wood on top, bordered with a brass that has a lovely patina..and the second tier features really nice caning which is in really good condition. I got it for $7.50:

My heart skipped a beat when I saw it.
.

What an unexpectedly nice start to the weekend.

Weekend Projects

.

Things to tackle over the next few weekends:

1. Figure out book storage

I am still working on this one. The book/catalog/magazine stacks are everywhere..in every room.

-I need to finish the stripping/painting of that Mid Century Salvaged Built-In. I just bought more stripper yesterday.

-Scour Estate Sales in hopes of finding a nice bookcase in solid wood for under $20 (or find plans to make my own).

-I really need to find a nightstand or two in my bedroom similar to this for my books:

.

2. Make new cushions for chair

-I love this chair I purchased right after we moved into the new house. I recently moved it into my room from downstairs though, as I tend to freak out when my daughter or her friends sit in it :/ and figured it would out of harm's way upstairs with me.

-I want to put the original cushions completely away into storage and make new ones with new covers in a simple color/fabric:

-I do not think I could swing this job. Piping scares me, and even with no piping..the covers would have to have zippers (I can't do zippers).

-IF YOU OR SOMEONE YOU KNOW SEWS AND CAN MAKE CUSHION COVERS AND WOULD LIKE TO TAKE ON THIS JOB FOR ME, PLEASE PLEASE EMAIL ME AT INFO@DAY-LAB.COM !!!
.

3. Ah...the backyard!

-I am still working on The Front Yard, but need to start the back as well.

-I love wild flowers and vines and overgrowth to a degree...I would prefer all that to a completely manicured yard. But the back yard is quickly becoming a forest. Lots of beds that need some care. But first, I would like to clean off all the leaves and growth on this fantastic like brick patio:

Its the perfect little area for some seating/picnic bench/bbq type things.
.

-I am keeping all the vines on the fencing and gate, but the little walkway needs some cleaning up and a few stepping stones:

.

The stepping stones that lead from the screened in porch to the garage are almost completely covered over by grass and need to be cleaned up...and the little brick surrounded circle, which used to contain a fountain, is so so so overgrown. I would love to clear it up and plant something tall there. Also the beds by that garage door are a nightmare right now and could use a little work:

.

I hope it doesn't rain..

But if it does...there is always...

4. The Kitchen!

This will be a nice big job...more on it later..

.

Have a great weekend and be safe!
